Joo Chiat Terrace
Designed by: Jess
Peranakan craft, curated heirlooms and contemporary comfort—stitched together to host memorable, private dinners in the heart of Joo Chiat.
A conservation terrace reinterpreted with Straits Chinese (Peranakan) craft and quiet contemporary comfort. The long shophouse plan is edited into a welcoming front salon, a dramatic air-well dining hall with a show kitchen, and calm private quarters above.
The first floor of the house has an open-concept layout. It stretches from the main door to the living room, then the kitchen, and the dining space.
Arrival & Front Salon:
Guests step in to a pastel entry with hand-pressed Peranakan tiles, lacquered timber screens and shuttered windows with colored glass. The salon mixes a low rattan settee, carved teak sideboards and framed batik textiles—perfect for aperitif and storytelling before dinner. The flooring on the first floor was hand-painted to look like polished concrete.
Air-Well Dining Hall
At the heart of the home, the original air-well is retained for light and breeze. A solid teak communal table sits on a carpet of heritage tiles; walls carry limewash in jade, peony and cream with slim brass trims. Built-in banquettes in cane weave soften acoustics, while a display armoire shows nyonya porcelain, jars and enamel tiffins—décor that doubles as serviceware.
Show Kitchen & Bar
A chef’s counter fronts the open kitchen so plating becomes theatre. Terrazzo counters, dark teak cabinetry and patinated brass hardware nod to old kopitiams; appliances, wine chiller and storage are concealed. A repurposed altar table forms the dessert & tea bar, complete with enamel kettles and spice drawers.
Courtyard & Rear
Beyond the dining hall, a pocket courtyard with plants that cools the plan and perfumes the evening air. Textured plaster, lantern pendants and pebblewashed floors make an easy indoor–outdoor transition.
Private Quarters (Upper Floor)
Bedrooms upstairs are serene: timber floors, shuttered windows, rattan headboards and batik runners. Bathrooms pair terrazzo with Peranakan border tiles—heritage detail, hotel comfort.
Lighting & Atmosphere
Layered lighting— lantern pendants, cove washes and candle points—creates an intimate glow for dining while keeping artefacts and textures gently highlighted.
